ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS IS PLEASE?

Hi,

We went to a Steam Fair yesterday and I picked up this gorgeous **********, its beautifully crafted, a bit rough round the edges through heavy use. It was in a box that was filled with various tools and I just fell in love with it.......saddo that I am but it put a huge grin on my face........ But I don't know what it is and would really love to know as I want to sympathetically alter it. Does anyone know? Please help if you can, all suggestions welcome.

Thank you for calling in and am hoping in anticipation that by the end of the day I will know what it is with your help. Many thanks, Annette x

Of course I know what it is!!! It's a thingy, you know, a doobry wotsit, an oojamaflop.

Glad I could help you to clear that up.

Very intriguing! I asked hubby and his best guess is something to do with leather working, either tapping with it or using it to stretch hides. I'll keep checking in to see if you find out exactly what it is.

It looks a well used piece of kit, if the handle had been longer it looks as if it could have been used in the laundry to pound the washing. Or, imagine an old fashioned butcher with a large mincing machine, it could be to push the meat into the mincer.
Have fun Annette

Just shown the picture to my OH, he thinks it could be a stonemasons mallet

Sorry folks I should have said it was 9inches high and the base is 4inches wide. At the moment the most likely appears to be the stonemasons mallet as under the base it hasn't any markings....mmmmm a mystery
Many many thanks Annette xx

My granny had an identical tool for mashing potatoes. No idea if that's what THIS one is though. Sorry.

Ooo-er a mystery object Annette. I'll be intrigued to find out what it's for. It looks like some sort of mallet but I have really no idea.
I only know that you'll make something amazing with it. ;)

Well, there you are, so many suggestions. Before reading them my first guess was a mallet and then a potato masher, but I have to say, I like the idea of a leather working tool!

I too first thought of a mallet, but on second thoughts, could it have anything to do with putting on horseshoes?
